Get Your Feet Wet at the Annual Nanticoke River Wade-In and Report Card Launch

The Nanticoke Watershed Alliance invites you to join us as we celebrate the Nanticoke River and learn more about its current health at our annual Wade-In.  This event is free to the public and will be held on Monday, July 30th from 11:00– 2:00 PM at Cedar Hill Marina in Bivalve, Maryland.  The Alliance will be launching the 2011 Nanticoke River Report Card at the event, as well as providing lunch and hands-on activities for local youth.

Attendees are encouraged to get their feet wet to help evaluate the river’s condition.  Using the “sneaker index”, originated by U.S. Senator C. Bernard (Bernie) Fowler of Maryland, watershed residents will measure how deeply they can wade into the water and still see their feet.  This is a fun way to measure water clarity or the ability of sunlight to reach the river bottom, which is crucial for dissolved oxygen levels and bottom-dwelling species such as oysters.

This year we will be celebrating the five year anniversary of the Creekwatchers program and honoring the citizen scientists who make the Nanticoke River Report Card production possible.  Established in July of 2007, this ambitious program has transformed 68 citizens into Creekwatchers who have served over 700 hours annually collecting water quality data.

The Nanticoke Watershed Alliance would like to thank the Wicomico County Department of Recreation, Parks & Tourism for their support to make this event possible. Enjoy a free lunch beginning at 12:00 PM followed by the 2011 Report Card launch and educational presentation. Don’t miss the “Wade-In” activity beginning at 1:00 PM.
